What is the Endocannabinoid System?

Human Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a sophisticated biological system for cell-signaling made up of cannabinoid receptors, naturally occurring neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids, and cannabinoid receptor proteins that are distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems (CB1 and CB2). The ECS actively controls a variety of physiological and cognitive processes and helps maintain the body’s internal environment’s homeostasis by modulating the immunological, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. The ECS is important for overall health since it is connected to the immune system, sleep, emotion, learning and memory, appetite and digestion, metabolism, bone and muscle formation, skin and nerve function, and motor control.
